A successful two-day workshop was held in Plymouth focussing on validating the performance of Sentinel-1, -2 and -3 at retrieving ocean colour, sea-surface temperature and upper ocean dynamics in the open ocean and coastal environments was held in Plymouth in June 2017.
Speakers came from worldwide to discuss the latest techniques for validating satellite data and worked to identify potential strategies for the validation of future Sentinel missions. In total there were over 50 participants from 30 organisations in 14 countries.
The workshop began with a welcome plenary session with welcomes and introduction from Plymouth Marine Laboratory by Steve Groom from Craig Donlon on behalf of ESA and the Copernicus Sentinel Missions. There was then an update on the status of Sentinel-3 and an overview of the AMT and AMT4Sentinel projects. This was followed by sessions on fiducial reference measurement methods and protocols, ocean colour validation, sea-surface temperature validation and validation of upper ocean dynamics. A lively and interactive poster session rounded off the first day and the discussions continued well into the conference dinner at the end of the event.
Throughout the workshop there was a lively twitter discussion with a total of 109 tweets using the hashtag #AMT4S2017, which attracted 173 retweets and 266 likes. Hayley Evers-King in particular used the platform to provide an enlightening commentary on the event. A selection of the twitter highlights can be seen at on our twitter moment and many of the workshop presentations are available to download from the workshop webpage.
